Landis+Gyr Signs Advanced Metering Contract with SMUD

1 August 2009 – New York, NY – Landis+Gyr, the global leader in energy management offering utilities next generation smart grid solutions, today announced a contract with Sacramento Municipal Utility District(SMUD) to supply all of the planned 620,000 smart meters for use in the deployment of SMUDs advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).

Under the agreement, SMUD, the sixth largest community-owned electric utility in terms of customers served, plans to deploy the technology-rich Landis+Gyr FOCUS® family of smart meters for residential, industrial and commercial customers throughout their service area. Smart metering solutions, expected to revolutionize energy management and grid reliability, provide a two-way flow of data between customer meters and utility back-end systems. With this two-way data flow, utilities will be able to offer customers a broad array of new pricing, demand response, and energy automation options that enhance the efficiency and reliability of the electric grid. Customers will benefit from more information, expanded choices, simpler and smarter management of their energy as well as the potential to reduce the environmental impact of their energy use.

“We are proud to have been chosen as the meter vendor for SMUD’s large scale smart grid deployment, and feel that the decision affirms that Landis+Gyr has the most feature-rich meter family in the marketplace today.” said Landis+Gyr North American CEO Richard Mora.

"This is the first step in modernizing the electric grid for Sacramento," said SMUD General Manager and CEO John DiStasio. "Building the smart grid using Landis+Gyr’s robust meter technology offered us the best value in opening the door to the many improvements that will help customers use energy more efficiently and better manage their electricity bill.”

Landis+Gyr’s electric meter contract is part of SMUD’s AMI rollout that recently received regulatory approval. Landis+Gyr will work on this project with partner Silver Spring Networks, provider of the communications solution.

In recent months, Landis+Gyr has unveiled a number of major AMI deals with utilities across the globe, including two announced in Texas – most recently a five-year advanced metering contract with utility AEP-Texas as well as the state’s largest with Oncor for more than 3 million homes and small businesses, in addition to selection as the primary meter vendor for Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E’s) deployment of over 5 million smart electricity meters.
